Plein Air at Quintana Beach

Have you ever tried plein air painting or sketching (outdoors, on location)?

I've been away from this blog for a while but am back now with some fun news. As many of you know, I started a plein air (outdoor) painting group in November of 2020. I asked a few of my Master Naturalist friends to join me, and they said yes! Four joined me. It was a way to get out into nature towards the end of the Covid lockdown. I was weary—everyone was tired of being isolated. It was an activity that we could do safely while spreading out. We haven't looked back! For more than five years, we have painted once a month in Brazoria County, Texas. 60 painting sessions at roughly 28 locations. I have had 58 artists paint with me over the years. Guests from Africa and Tokyo have joined us. All ages from teens to 80-year-olds have joined the group. All skill levels are welcome. We all have to start somewhere, right? The more experienced artists love to share their knowledge and encourage the beginners; it's just what artists do. I think learning to paint from direct observation is the way to go.

Some have come and gone, deciding outdoor painting is not for them. I admire everyone who gave it a try; it's certainly not for everyone. We have to deal with the bugs, changing light, heat and cold, rain, and wind. We get up early for the golden light. We haul equipment to the field. It's challenging, to say the least! 19 members of the Brazoria County Plein Aires have endured and are ready to show their work in the first-ever Brazoria County Plein Air exhibition. Here's your invitation for an evening of art conversation and fun. Mark your calendar and join us for this inspiring event!
